Plasmonic Waveguides Co-Integrated with Si3N4 Waveguide Platform for Integrated Biosensors

2019

Integration of plasmonic waveguides with low-loss photonic platforms have attracted research efforts as the means to benefit from the extra-ordinary features of plasmonics while enhancing the functional portfolio of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs). In this work, we review a technology platform that integrates water cladded plasmonic waveguides integrated in a low-loss Si 3 N 4 photonic platform, targeting biosensing applications. Results obtained experimentally and numerically will be presented with respect to propagation losses, interface coupling loss and accumulated phase change per unit length, showing how Surface Plasmon Polariton (SPP) waveguides can be effectively combined with p…

Supported C60-IL-PdNPs as extremely active nanocatalysts for C-C cross-coupling reactions

2016

A C60-ionic liquid hybrid has been covalently linked to three different solid supports, namely amorphous silica, SBA-15 and Fe2O3@SiO2, and the resulting materials have been employed as covalently supported ionic liquid phases (cSILP) in order to immobilize and stabilize palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs). These novel hybrid materials are based on a sort of "matryoshka" system (PdNPs@imidazolium-salt@C60@support) in which the imidazolium-based moieties have not been directly linked to the surface of the support, but they are present in an octopus-like spatial arrangement on the uniformly surface-distributed fullerenes. These materials have been fully characterized and successfully employed as …

From equilibrium to steady state: The transient dynamics of colloidal liquids under shear

2008

We investigate stresses and particle motion during the start up of flow in a colloidal dispersion close to arrest into a glassy state. A combination of molecular dynamics simulation, mode coupling theory and confocal microscopy experiment is used to investigate the origins of the widely observed stress overshoot and (previously not reported) super-diffusive motion in the transient dynamics. A link between the macro-rheological stress versus strain curves and the microscopic particle motion is established. Negative correlations in the transient auto-correlation function of the potential stresses are found responsible for both phenomena, and arise even for homogeneous flows and almost Gaussia…

Get into flow: Design of experiments as a key technique in the optimization of anodic dehydrogenative C,C cross-coupling reaction of phenols in flow …

2021

Abstract The optimization of electro-organic reactions poses a challenge due to the various parameters involved. Quite often those parameters are not independent from each other, leading the experimental scientist using linear approaches into an optimization loophole. We report a strategy for the optimization of the anodic oxidative dehydrogenative C,C cross-coupling reactions for the synthesis of biphenols based on Design of Experiments (DoE), which overcomes the drawbacks of linear optimization approaches. Using a fractional design, we increased the yield of a long-time investigated example reaction from 44% up to 85% and point out different suitable reaction conditions through to linear …

Effects of anodizing surface treatment on the mechanical strength of aluminum alloy 5083 to fibre reinforced composites adhesive joints

2021

Abstract In this study, the anodizing process based on the use of tartaric sulfuric acid solution (TSA) was carried out on metal substrate to evaluate for the first time its effect on the adhesion strength and corrosion resistance of aluminium alloy (i.e., AA5083) to fibre (i.e., basalt or glass) reinforced composite adhesive joints for nautical applications. Furthermore, some TSA anodized samples were soaked in a NaOH solution to investigate the influence of this post-immersion step on the joint performances. With the aim to improve the fibre-matrix adhesion in the composite substrate thus further increasing the overall mechanical response of the joint, glass and basalt fibres were treated…

The spectrum of weakly coupled map lattices

1998

We consider weakly coupled analytic expanding circle maps on the lattice Zd (for d 2 l), with small coupling strength c and coupling between two sites decaying exponentially with the distance. We study the spectrum of the associated (Perron-Frobenius) transfer operators. We give a FrCchet space on which the operator associated to the full system has a simple eigenvalue at 1 (corresponding to the SRB measure p* previously obtained by Bricmont-Kupiainen (BKl)) and the rest of the spectrum, except maybe for continuous spectrum, is inside a disc of radius smaller than one. For d = 1 we also construct Banach spaces of densities with respect to pr on which perturbation theory, applied to the diff…

Mitochondrial dynamics in type 2 diabetes: Pathophysiological implications

2017

Mitochondria play a key role in maintaining cellular metabolic homeostasis. These organelles have a high plasticity and are involved in dynamic processes such as mitochondrial fusion and fission, mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis. Type 2 diabetes is characterised by mitochondrial dysfunction, high production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and low levels of ATP. Mitochondrial fusion is modulated by different proteins, including mitofusin-1 (MFN1), mitofusin-2 (MFN2) and optic atrophy (OPA-1), while fission is controlled by mitochondrial fission 1 (FIS1), dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1) and mitochondrial fission factor (MFF). PARKIN and (PTEN)-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1) partici…

Theoretical prediction of structural, vibrational and NMR parameters of plastic optical fiber (POF) material precursors. Cis and trans perhydro- and …

2014

Abstract Density functional theory (DFT) prediction of cis and trans perhydro- and perfluoro-2-methylene-4,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolanes structure, supported by vibrational analysis and calculation of multinuclear isotropic nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shieldings and indirect spin–spin couplings (SSCCs) was performed. The performance of the used methodology was verified on 1,3-dioxolane selected as model compound. The structures of hydrogenated and fluorinated monomers of POF materials were calculated using B3LYP and BLYP density functionals combined with 6-311 ++ G(3df,2pd) basis set. The BLYP/6-311++G(3df,2pd) level of theory was suggested for vibrational analysis. Gauge independent atomi…

A New Heterogeneous Catalyst Obtained via Supramolecular Decoration of Graphene with a Pd2+ Azamacrocyclic Complex

2019

A new G-(H2L)-Pd heterogeneous catalyst has been prepared via a self-assembly process consisting in the spontaneous adsorption, in water at room temperature, of a macrocyclic H2L ligand on graphene (G) (G + H2L = G-(H2L)), followed by decoration of the macrocycle with Pd2+ ions (G-(H2L) + Pd2+ = G-(H2L)-Pd) under the same mild conditions. This supramolecular approach is a sustainable (green) procedure that preserves the special characteristics of graphene and furnishes an efficient catalyst for the Cu-free Sonogashira cross coupling reaction between iodobenzene and phenylacetylene. Indeed, G-(H2L)-Pd shows an excellent conversion (90%) of reactants into diphenylacetylene under mild conditio…
